The Direct / Thermal Transfer Labels for use with a thermal printer. The main difference is that with direct thermal labels you do not have a ribbon in the printer. The labels feed through the printer and heat from the printhead is directly applied to the label resulting in a chemical reaction that causes the label face to darken. The Thermal transfer labels use a ribbon that feeds through the printer applying heat to the ribbon to transfer wax and resin to the label face.A more expensive option but the print will last longer and be harder wearing. To establish the correct label material take the label and scratch it with your finger nail,if a dark line appears on the material it will be Direct Thermal material.
